Interior Trend: STRIPES

Stripes have been big news in the fashion industry for years. And because of this, they’ve now moved into the home. From rugs and pillows to wallpapers and bedding. Whether thick or thin, horizontal or vertical, stripes are one pattern that we can always rely on to produce outstanding results and striking spaces.

"Could there be a more classic – and, right now, trendy – pattern than stripes? They’re everywhere, and for good reason. Somehow they manage to work just as well in adding structure and prep to a space as they do in being bold and, dare I say, rebellious. On a large scale such as walls, whether they be horizontal or vertical or diagonal or any other way, stripes undoubtedly make a statement." - Homedit

"You can use stripes in a traditional way or in a modern and bold way. Decorating with stripes is a great way to get a sophisticated look and bring some order to your space. Stripes have the power to reshape a room with little effort. One of the best things about stripes is that they’re very versatile. They can be elegant, bold and classic, depending on the aesthetics that you want to achieve!" - BOCA DO LOBO

"In true Comme des Garcons spirit, the stripe is turning up in novel ways, adding a linear punch to everything." - VOGUE

Stripes are commonly used as a neutral design element that serves as an anchor to any space. However, stripes are taking a bigger role this year as a statement-maker all their own.

"Consider adding bold stripes to anything, from a wing-back chair to new wallpaper design. Zillow notes that stripes can be worked into any space, from the uber-modern to the more traditional. - Kelley Solberg

"Use stripes in small decorating details. If you’re afraid to commit to stripes, small decorating elements, such as pillows, are a great way to experiment with them. These are elegant and classic details that will work well in traditional and modern spaces." - BOCA DO LOBO

"I’ve always been drawn to simple graphic design and contrasts in room designs, especially when they take a classic pattern, such as a stripe, and make it feel fresh and original." - Bright Bazaar

“Stripes create an illusion that can change the look and size of a space—visual trickery is what stripes can do for a room,” - Adam Glassman/O Magazine

Striped furnishings can often overpower a room, so use them as a jumping-off point for color, then add patterns and accents in darker and lighter shades of their hues. “There’s nothing more chic than mixing stripes with florals or polka dots or animal prints, but you need to choose one color palette that is the thread,” says Adam. “It’s about finding one theme color throughout.”

The stripe trend isn’t limited to walls or decor elements. For maximum impact, an eye-catching rug, like a black-and-white design, works incredibly. The biggest secret is the scale! Make sure that the rug is big enough to create a bold statement.

“A striped rug leads your eye right where it wants, horizontally or vertically. It’s an architectural power that redirects the eye and reshapes a space.” - Adam Glassman/O Magazine

"Stripes have never been so dynamic and ubiquitous." - Fashionisers

"The simplicity of the stripes trend will give your interiors a style update that is timeless and chic without ever looking overdone. As stripes are a classic design that will never go out of fashion – there’s no denying the enduring appeal of the stripe." - The Rug Seller
