Interior Trend: WOVEN, KNOTTED & KNIT / Textured Accessories & Art

Fashion designers often add interesting texture to their garments in an effort to capture customer interest, and now, home and interior designers are doing the same, creating everything from textural wall coverings to textured furniture - seeing a surge in handmade and textured interior accessories such as plaited wool wall hangings, knitted cotton rope pendant lights, knitted felted wool wall hangings, knitted wool throws with felted tassels and more. Providing a tactile quality to an otherwise simple design stands to elevate its uniqueness, providing a way to enhance and modernize a product or space without making it look over the top.

KNOTTED

What goes around comes around. Much like fashion, trends in home decor cycle through different styles and influences. Macramé, a technique that uses different knots to create patterns, last had its heyday in the earthy-all natural ’70s and before that it was the Victorians who couldn't get enough of it. Crafters have revived the technique, bringing elaborate textile creations into today’s homes.

For the history buff you can see the rope and knotted patterns the Victorians preferred from Sylvia's Book of Macrame (1882), which you can read in its entirety here - showing what was popular for fringes and other decorative touches.

"This year we are seeing a huge trend in adding texture to your decor with macrame and knitted wall hangings, pillows, lamp shades and even picture frames. Macramé is a form of textile-making by using knots, which is different from knitting and weaving (done by threading)." - Houzz

"You may have noticed macramé everything popping up, well, everywhere. Mostly I can’t stop spotting macramé wall hangings. These crafted beauties have a bohemian vibe, feel homey and whimsical, and can really warm up a space. But have you ever considered macramé hanging planters, a macramé headboard, or a macramé door?" - Glitter Inc.

"Let’s talk about woven wall hangings and their modern texture combos with chunky thread, exquisite fibers and even some color-blocking to create playful patterns. What I particularly love about this micro-trend is the unique combination of fashion and ancient craftwork. I’m totally drawn to everything that is handmade, locally produced and that has history behind it." - decor8

"This trend seems to be picking up steam, and we will be seeing more of these gorgeous woven wall hangings in all shapes and colors popping up in nurseries and kids rooms. Textural and colorful, it is a natural choice for baby's room." - Parade

Other crafty adornments found in textural wall hangings are tassles and pom-poms. Yarn or fabric (cut or frayed) are conformed into colorful displays that beg you to touch them.

"This is nothing like your grade school craft project macramé. We're talking about elegant macramé designs, like a macramé wall hanging worthy of an art gallery, or a macramé holder for a modern planter at a funky, hip restaurant. It's a fun new way to add texture color to your wedding. Plus it's a really versatile idea. Colorful macramé fringe is boho, but a simple knotted planter can also be minimalist and modern. Hang macramé planters filled with flowers over the tables, wrap your napkins with woven macramé rings, or create a dip-dyed macramé ceremony backdrop!" - the Knot

WOVEN

"I've been seeing this beautiful woven goodness all over my Pinterest feed lately and I'm in love! It's a great alternative to prints or art and adds a great "collected" feel to your home." - Sun Soul Style

"Have a blank wall and looking for an inexpensive and unique way to decorate it? Try using woven baskets to add a touch of rustic chic without having to spend a fortune on art prints or a ton of time painting the walls. Placed together, baskets create an eye-catching ensemble that instantly transports you to exotic lands." - Aubrey Andel

CHUNKY KNITS

"Chunky knits, tight knits, knitted wallpaper, knitted lights; pillows, rugs and furniture. When the temperatures drop, these knitted accessories add a touch of physical and visual warmth to your home. Rich in texture and full of depth, these pieces look wonderful set against smooth modern finishes and also layered up in more rustic interiors. And the best thing about this look is, if you are handy with some knitting needles, you can actually make some of it yourself. Start with a simple knit blanket and who knows what will happen?! And if you are not the crafty type, don’t worry – we have some great resources for buying these wonderful knitted creations." - designlovers
