INTERIOR TRENDS for 2016

Here's a rundown of what we will be seeing more of in the next year with interior trends and lifestyle spaces. The options and the styles continue to expand as our world becomes smaller and our need to escape and cocoon in our homes increases. Simple rustic charm may still be an option but there is a movement towards vibrant, opulant, lux and glam.

PATTERNED WALLS: Wallpaper/Natural Surfaces

Wall coverings have been rising in popularity again (after a couple decades of being banished from our homes) and this year the market will continue to explode. From 70's inspired prints, to metalic and pastel finishes to botanicals and textured treatments - you will find what delights you for a small closet or a large-scale space. New wallcovering products are promoting themselves as "temporary" to ease our memory of trying to remove those determined to stay forever predecessors.

“Florals, including dark florals (remember florals with a black background from the 80s?), are back. Of course, they’re reinterpreted so that we’ll love them again!“ - Maria Killam

GROWING & GREEN: Indoor Plants/Living Walls

Whether your green-thumb preference is succulents, cacti or fiddle-leaf plants, their place in our homes is growing - not just as table top accents, but as a prominent focal points, as if they were art itself.

BOHO STYLE: Global Flavor/Vibrant Color/Nubby Weave/Layers

We have experienced a revival in the bohemian style that hasn't been seen since the 1970s, but instead of the hippie commune vibe, the current boho style is more global and sometimes even a little glam. Color and texture are key, as well as layers and mixed materials. Another trend mentioned in the blog (indoor plants) is an important element of this style, as well as the artisan/craft revival.

"Woolen knits and cozy crotches are making their way into the list of trends in 2016 because of the texture revolution that is expected to extend beyond 2015." - Decoholic

"Textile gurus often find muses in indigenous artisans the world over and collaborate to great effect. Trending presently is Guatemala, where colorful weaving has been part of the fabric of Mayan life for thousands of wildly vivid years." - House Beautiful

HISTORICAL MASH-UP: 17th-21st Century Eccleticism

Curated rooms with attention to pieces that stand on their own; representing a particular place from the past and yet validating it's present usage in a modern space. Not only can furnishings from diverse centuries work harmoniously together, but traditional silhouettes with contemporary colors or textiles help bring them into the 21st century. This trend includes the use of historically traditional patterns like large florals and scroll work.

"The design world has felt the arc of going from historically referenced interiors to relentlessly mid-century spaces. What I see/hope for now are more eclectic interiors in the truest sense of the word: interiors that reflect individual (historical) interests and a wide variety of styles, all brought together in a personal, non-formulaic mix." - Elissa Cullman/Cullman & Kravis Inc

"I see a mixing of the 18th and the 20th century in more unexpected ways and a return to working with color. Mix the very classical with the very modern." - Brian McCarthy/Brian J. McCarthy Inc

"I look forward to using more pieces from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, so underappreciated the last mid-century-MAD decade, and allowing their strength of line and richness of material to enliven the 21st century interiors." - James Drake/Drake+Anderson

RUSTIC CHARM: Lodge/Farm & Barn/Cabin

This is another trend that is carrying over from recent years but expanding in expression. Whether you find serenity in a mountain lodge, a farm house/barn or a fishing cabin, you can incorporate many trends that are finding new purpose in our home spaces (antlers, taxidermy, reclaimed wood, fur-like textiles, animal skins, galvanized metals, milk paint, distressed furniture, log & timber accents, plaid & buffalo check, etc.)

WARM METALS: Copper/Brass/Rose Gold

The new colour of the year proclaimed from Dulux is – the Copper Blush – a stylish combination of metallic finishes and warm pinks and oranges that reinstate the more positive global outlook in design and the warmer spectrum of pinks, reds and oranges which are replacing the cool blues and greens of the recent years. - InteriorZine

Platinum, gold, copper, steel — as long as they've got metallic sheen, they go together in our book. It's bling like you've never seen before. - House Beautiful

FACETS:

"Faceted forms have expanded throughout the design market. The sleek angles and sharp edges make simple pieces very contemporary. Faceted home goods are sort of the “jewelry” of a room. Whether it’s a subtle applied pattern or an exaggerated statement table, the facet trend is definitely a nice mix of edgy + simplistic characteristics. I’ve rounded up a mix of faceted décor: light fixtures, tables, and even a faceted cheese board." - Natalie Drake

MUST HAVES: Pendants/Pedestals

We love our chandeliers, but 2016 is the year of the statement light pendant. Another attention grabber, ideal for your sparest corners: the tall, handsome pedestal, primed to exhibit a sculpture, a plant, or even the house cat (who likely considers himself worthy of it anyway).

COLORS of the YEAR: Rose Quartz/Serenity Blue

For the first time, two colours have been selected as Pantone's color of the year – Rose Quartz and Serenity – which, combined, generate a feeling of lightness and order. Rose Quartz is a delicate shade that inspires peace and tranquillity, while Serenity is a relaxing and impalpable blue, like a serene blue sky.

"These tones can be used separately or together to decorate spaces. The advantage of these colors is that they will look so cozy and clear, and will perform as neutral elements to mix with other colors. The implementation at home for your interior looks elegant, fresh and fashionable." - Home Decor Trends

STILL GOING STRONG:

Just becuase it's a new year doesn't mean everything from 2015 is to be tossed to the wayside. Many trends from last year are still going strong such as: Blues, Pastels, Geometrics, Gold, 70's Mod-Style, Industrial, Sustainable Materials

FUTURE TREND PREDICTION: Black Rooms

This color scheme for complete coverage of a room is slowly being embraced. If white is the safest color most are comfortable with, than you can be sure that the polar opposite, black, causes the greatest apprehension. And yet, it is so comforting and sophisticated. Dark backgrounds ground a space and make most anything stand out, and black does this better than any other color. Black goes with EVERYTHING!
